Sani Shinkafi, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain from the Northwest, has asserted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu owes both his party nomination and electoral victory primarily to support from the Northwestern region.
In an interview on Symfoni TV, Shinkafi provided a detailed breakdown of how Tinubu secured the APC presidential ticket, emphasizing the crucial role played by Northwest governors and delegates.
"If not because of Northwest where I come from, Tinubu could have not even become a candidate of APC, he could have not even become president because during the presidential primaries, El-Rufai, Ganduje, Badaru, Matawalle, and Bagudu, Bagudu was the chairman of the national convention planning committee," Shinkafi stated. "It was Northwest who gave Tinubu majority lawful votes to be declared as a candidate of APC."
The APC chieftain detailed how delegates from other regions voted during the party primaries.
"All the delegates of the Northeast voted for Lawan. Most of the delegates from North Central voted for Yahaya Bello. Most of the delegates from the Southeast voted for Dave Umahi and Rochas, and the South-South—the delegates voted for Rotimi Amaechi," he explained.
Shinkafi noted that even Tinubu's own region did not provide unanimous support.
"For Southwest, the votes were split between Kayode Fayemi, Yemi Osinbajo and Tinubu," he revealed.
The Northwest's support continued into the general election, according to Shinkafi.
