Former Minister of Education and frontline activist, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, has slammed the National Assembly and the Nigeria Police Force for what she described as a "declaration of war" against the Nigerian people following the tear-gassing of peaceful protesters at the National Assembly complex on Tuesday.
Ezekwesili, a member of the Movement for Credible Elections, had earlier joined colleagues at the legislative house to demand the inclusion of a clause for the Mandatory Real-Time Electronic Transmission of Results in the ongoing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Reform Bill.
In a series of blistering posts on her X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday night, Ezekwesili revealed that shortly after she departed from a press briefing at the venue, police officers moved in and tear-gassed the remaining citizens.
"Tear-gassing our citizens for exercising their right to protest an odious Bill? Really?" she questioned, condemning the use of force against Nigerians demanding electoral transparency.
The activist did not hold back in her assessment of the National Assembly. She accused both the Senate and the House of Representatives of conspiring to "backtrack" and adopt a "dangerous text" that would effectively legalize a "culture of electoral frauds."
Ezekwesili warned that by stripping the bill of mandatory electronic transmission, the lawmakers have positioned themselves against the will of the people.
"The two Chambers have clearly declared war against our country and people," she stated. "They unwisely may be preparing to send their ANTI-NIGERIAN PEOPLES’ INEC Bill to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to assent to."
