A 27-year-old woman has died under mysterious circumstances in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) after visiting her boyfriend, police and community sources have confirmed.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, in the Dei-Dei area of the FCT, when the woman identified as Esther Akwaji left her family home, saying she was going to a bank but never returned. Hours later, her family received a call from a man claiming to be her boyfriend, informing them of her sudden death.
According to sources, the man said he had bought food for Esther and himself. Shortly after eating, she began vomiting and became critically ill. He claimed to have rushed her to Kubwa General Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
However, the man reportedly fled the hospital soon after her death and has since switched off his phone, leaving family members and authorities unable to contact him.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. Police said Esther’s body has been deposited for autopsy to determine the actual cause of death, and that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the boyfriend.
Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh confirmed the case and stated that detectives are working to establish what happened between the time Esther visited the man and her sudden collapse.
The investigation has drawn public attention and concern over safety and accountability in similar social situations.
