In a recent interview with News Central TV, Public Affairs Analyst Olalekan Anjolaiya discussed the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, particularly concerning the heightened impeachment efforts against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, which have increased tensions in the state’s political climate.
He expressed criticism of what he termed the strategic maneuvering by former Governor Nyesom Wike, stating, “You want to remove the deputy and governor so the Speaker of House of Assembly becomes governor.” Anjolaiya suggested that the impeachment initiative may be driven more by the desire to place allies in essential political positions than by governance concerns.
He pointed out that the current impeachment proceedings reveal significant inconsistencies in Rivers State politics, noting that even members of Fubara’s party seem to align themselves with Wike. According to Anjolaiya, Fubara’s shift to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has fractured Wike’s entrenched influence in the region, leading to aggressive attempts by Wike to reclaim political power.
Anjolaiya cautioned that these political tactics could have dire consequences for governance and stability in Rivers State. He stressed that historical power struggles often distract leadership from focusing on development needs and can heighten tensions among political figures and the public.
The analyst also emphasized the importance of national leadership stepping in to uphold constitutional processes and prevent the exploitation of political offices for personal interests. He urged both Governor Fubara and former Governor Wike to put the welfare of Rivers State residents above partisan or personal agendas to maintain the state’s political and social stability.
