As a Lube Engineer and your Car Concierge, I want to address a part 90% of drivers ignore: The Air Filter.
Most people think servicing is just oil and oil filters. They forget the engine breathes air.
Why you should care:
1. Fuel Consumption: A clogged filter is like running a marathon with a mask on. Your engine works 10% harder and burns 10% more fuel.
2. Engine Longevity: Harmattan dust is fine silt. If the filter is full, that silt goes into your combustion chamber and scratches your cylinder walls. This is the silent killer that leads to smoky engines and thousands/millions of engine swaps.
Where to find it (DIY):
You don't need a mechanic for this.
1. Open your hood.
2. Locate a black plastic housing/box usually located to the left or right of the engine.
3. Snap off the metal clips (or unscrew it).
4. Lift the filter out. If it’s filled with sand or is dark gray/black, it’s dead. Replace it with a genuine OEM part immediately.
