Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been granted honorary citizenship by the US State of Georgia.
The proclamation, signed by Georgia's Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, on January 16, 2026, also recognizes Kanu as a Goodwill Ambassador from Georgia.
This move has sparked reactions, with some seeing it as a symbol of international recognition and solidarity, while others question its impact on Kanu's current detention in Nigeria .
Kanu is currently serving a life sentence at a correctional facility in Sokoto, Nigeria, after being cónvicted on terrórism-related charges. He has vôwed to appeal the judgment.
