Several undocumented Nigerians and other African migrants living in the United Kingdom have reportedly resorted to sleeping inside waste bins and on the streets in desperate attempts to evade immigration raids and deportation.
The situation follows a major immigration overhaul by the UK Government in 2025, tagged “Plan for Change.” The policy triggered widespread fear among migrants, particularly those without legal residency, after mass deportations commenced in mid-2025.
Under the new enforcement drive, immigration officers intensified checks, prompting some undocumented migrants to abandon shelters and visible accommodation, choosing instead to hide overnight in refuse bins and secluded public spaces to avoid arrest.
The Home Office confirmed the deportation exercise, announcing that 43 asylum seekers and criminal offenders were recently returned on a charter flight to Nigeria and Ghana.
Human rights advocates have raised concerns over the humanitarian implications of the policy, warning that the crackdown is pushing vulnerable migrants into dangerous and degrading living conditions.
As enforcement continues, the plight of undocumented Africans in the UK has reignited debate around migration control, human dignity, and asylum protections.
