Former US President, Donald Trump, has threatened to take legal action against The New York Times over an opinion poll that showed low approval ratings for him.
Trump made the threat on Thursday through a post on his Truth Social page. He described the poll as fake and even suggested that such surveys should be treated as a crime.
The poll, conducted by New York Times and Siena University, showed that only 40 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s performance. The result is similar to other recent polls showing a drop in his popularity one year into his second term.
Reacting, Trump said the poll would be added to his ongoing lawsuit against the newspaper, accusing it of spreading lies and misleading the public.
Reports say the 79-year-old Republican has filed several defamation lawsuits against major media organisations in the past, including CNN, BBC, ABC, CBS, and others. Some of those cases reportedly ended in huge settlements.
Trump had earlier sued The New York Times in 2025, accusing it of publishing false reports to harm his 2024 election campaign. That case was dismissed before being filed again later.
In response, the newspaper described the lawsuit as an attempt to intimidate journalists and stop independent reporting.
The latest poll also showed that Trump’s support has dropped due to concerns over the economy and his tough approach to illegal immigration. Young and non-white voters who supported him in 2024 have reportedly turned away, leaving him with mainly older and white supporters.
