Togo has handed over former Burkina Faso leader, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, to authorities in Burkina Faso to face serious criminal charges.
Damiba was arrested in Togo after Burkina Faso officially asked for his extradition earlier this month. After checking the request and following legal procedures, Togolese officials approved his return.
He is accused of crimes such as corruption, misuse of public money, illegal enrichment, and money laundering.
A court in Lomé reviewed the case in an open hearing and agreed that Damiba should be sent back. The decision was based on international law and promises from Burkina Faso that his rights would be respected.
Burkina Faso authorities also assured that Damiba would get a fair trial and would not face the death penalty.
He was finally handed over to Burkina Faso officials on January 17, 2026, where he is expected to face trial.
