“The Marriage List Is Stopping Me From Getting Married” — Lady Cries Out Over N2m Bridal Demands

A young Tiv woman from Mbaaji, Kunav, in Vandeikya Local Government Area, has made a public appeal for help after alleging that her family demanded a marriage list worth over ₦2 million from her suitor.
According to the woman, her marriage plans have completely stalled despite an existing directive by the Tiv Traditional Council, led by the Tor Tiv, which pegged marriage lists in Tivland at not more than ₦1,000 to curb excessive and exploitative demands.

She lamented that repeated pleas to her family to comply with the traditional ruling were flatly rejected, with relatives insisting that every item on the list must be provided before she can be released for marriage.
🗣️ “The marriage list my family issued is stopping me from getting married. I am pleading with the Tor Tiv and the Tiv Traditional Council to come to my aid,” she said.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among residents and social commentators, especially in Vandeikya, where many are questioning how some families continue to issue marriage lists running into millions of naira, in defiance of a standing traditional order meant to protect young couples.
