Rights group SERAP has dragged Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) before a Federal High Court over an alleged ₦128 billion in missing or diverted public funds.
According to SERAP, the lawsuit seeks accountability and transparency in the management of power sector finances, arguing that corruption has continued to undermine electricity supply across the country.
The group linked the alleged financial mismanagement to repeated national grid collapses, persistent blackouts, and high electricity tariffs, which it says Nigerians are unfairly paying for despite unreliable service.
SERAP insists that without decisive action to tackle corruption and recover misused funds, reforms in the power sector will remain ineffective, leaving households and businesses to bear the brunt of poor electricity supply.
The case adds to growing pressure on authorities to clean up Nigeria’s power sector, long plagued by inefficiency, funding gaps, and weak accountability.
