Rivers Crisis:The President Is Deceiving Both The Governor And The FCT Minister - Nangi-Obu

According to a report by News Central, on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the intensifying political standoff in Rivers State has emerged as a focal point of national concern. The local House of Assembly is currently advancing an impeachment plot against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, citing allegations of gross misconduct.

However, these legislative efforts have encountered a significant judicial roadblock following a state high court injunction that halted the proceedings.

The complexity of the situation is deepened by the presence of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who is widely regarded as the governor’s political mentor. This rift between the former allies has sparked widespread anxiety regarding the stability of the region.

During a recent discussion, Maobuye Nangi-Obu, who serves as the Secretary-General of the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, suggested that the ongoing turmoil is a product of a broader calculated political manoeuvre. He stated clearly, “The president is deceiving both the governor and the FCT minister.”

According to Nangi-Obu, the presidency may be orchestrating a double-sided strategy by providing conflicting signals to both parties. While the governor is reportedly encouraged to remain passive, the FCT minister is seemingly permitted to proceed with his political agenda.

Nangi-Obu further cautioned that failure to resolve this friction peacefully could trigger a resurgence of the severe political unrest that plagued Rivers State during the early 2000s. This potential for renewed volatility has placed many Nigerians on high alert concerning the state’s security.

Supporters of Governor Fubara maintain that the impeachment drive is a coordinated political attack fuelled by lawmakers loyal to the FCT minister. Conversely, his detractors argue that his removal is necessary due to a perceived lack of effective leadership.

As the judicial process unfolds, the nation remains focused on the resolution of this power struggle, which will ultimately shape the political landscape and civil peace of Rivers State.
