Rivers Court Stops Impeachment Process Against Governor Fubara, Deputy

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has issued an interim injunction restraining the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Martin Chike-Amaewhule, and 32 others from taking further steps on the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.

The court also barred the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, from receiving, forwarding, considering or acting on any request, resolution or articles of impeachment aimed at setting up a panel to investigate the governor and his deputy for a period of seven days.

The order was made by Justice F.A. Fiberesima while ruling on an ex parte motion filed separately by Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Deputy Governor, Professor Ngozi Nma-Obu (Nma-Ordu).

Justice Fiberesima granted permission for the claimants to serve the interim order and other court processes on the first to 31st defendants at the gate of the Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters. The court also directed that the Chief Judge be served through any staff at his chambers within the judiciary premises.

The matter was adjourned to January 23, 2026, for hearing of the motion on notice.
