That was the clear message from the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, as he stormed the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) passport office in Gwagwalada, Abuja, unannounced.
Visibly upset by the delays, the minister called out officials for wasting citizens’ time despite applicants arriving early and paying fully for their passports.
“I don’t want to hear stories about collecting money for diesel or paper. Nigerians have paid completely. Serve them.”
He broke it down simply:
Passport enrolment takes 3 minutes
7 people should be done in 21 minutes
Yet people were still waiting endlessly downstairs
“Some of these people need to go to work. Time is money. Time is expensive. This is unacceptable.”
The minister also shut down the idea of VIP treatment:
“Nigeria has no VIP. Use that so-called VIP section for the people. It won’t cost you anything.”
His final reminder was direct and firm:
“When you wear this uniform, you wear a uniform of sacrifice. You are here to serve the people.”
