A member of the House of Representatives, Afam Ogene, has blamed recent changes noticed in the new tax law on what he described as “executive rascality.”
Ogene, who chairs the House Minority Caucus Ad-hoc Committee, spoke during an interview on television, where he said the problem likely came from overzealous actions by some officials in the executive arm of government.
According to him, lawmakers discovered differences between what the National Assembly passed and what appeared in the final, gazetted version of the tax law. He stressed that the House is now working to identify who made the changes and how they happened.
Ogene explained that lawmaking follows a clear process, including readings, public hearings, harmonisation between the House and Senate, and the preparation of a clean copy before it is sent to the President.
He added that lawmakers are not meant to be a rubber stamp, noting that bills sent by the executive must still go through proper scrutiny and approval by the National Assembly.
The lawmaker insisted that the integrity of the lawmaking process must be protected to ensure that only what lawmakers approved becomes law.
