Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has clarified that the government has not banned indigenous languages in schools, addressing widespread concerns.
He explained that the recent policy adjustments are aimed at enhancing students’ performance in national examinations conducted in English, not at eliminating local languages. Indigenous languages will continue to be taught as subjects in primary and secondary schools, reflecting the government’s commitment to preserving Nigeria’s linguistic heritage.
Dr. Alausa emphasized that the changes are meant to strengthen literacy and ensure students remain competitive academically, while still valuing local languages as part of the curriculum.
