A daring midnight robbery attempt along the Ilesa–Ibadan Expressway was dramatically cut short as operatives of the Osun State Security Network Agency, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps, swooped in and arrested a suspected armed robber after a tense chase.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when a distressed motorist, Maxwell Phillips, raised an alarm after allegedly escaping an attack by armed men on the highway. Phillips, said to be from Benue State, reportedly approached Amotekun operatives attached to the Ilesa Area Command at about 12:20 a.m., alerting them to suspicious and dangerous activities unfolding on the road.
Acting swiftly, the patrol team mobilised and moved to the scene to forestall what could have turned into a deadly ambush on unsuspecting road users.
On arrival, the operatives reportedly encountered suspected robbers attempting to stop vehicles. The suspects, startled by the presence of Amotekun personnel, abandoned their operation and fled into nearby bushes.
However, one of them was not as lucky.
During the pursuit, operatives apprehended Chinedu Eze, a 32-year-old man said to be from Ebonyi State. Items allegedly recovered from him include a cutlass, a torchlight, and a locally fabricated wooden object designed to resemble an AK-47 rifle, believed to have been used to intimidate motorists.
Sources said the suspect, during preliminary interrogation, admitted his involvement in the foiled robbery and disclosed that his accomplices escaped into the bush.
The arrest, according to Amotekun officials, reinforces the outfit’s resolve to keep Osun highways secure and deny criminals the freedom to operate under the cover of darkness. 🚔
