The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has insisted that the Monday sit-at-home exercise is not a criminal act, but a legal and peaceful civil protest carried out in solidarity with its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The group made the clarification in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesman, Emma Powerful.
Powerful was responding to comments by the Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, who recently warned that any teaching or non-teaching staff who fail to report for work on Mondays would face sanctions.
Recall that the Anambra State Government also announced plans to introduce pro-rata salary payments for workers as part of measures to end the sit-at-home. According to the state, from February 2026, civil servants’ salaries would be paid based on days worked.
IPOB maintained that the sit-at-home remains a symbolic, non-violent expression of protest and solidarity, rejecting claims that it constitutes an offence. The group also cautioned against what it described as attempts to criminalise peaceful civil action.
The development adds to ongoing tensions in the South-East, as authorities push to normalise economic and official activities while pro-Biafran groups continue to press for political and legal concessions.
