Tension is brewing in Ibadan as traditional stakeholders have openly called out the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, over what they describe as a deeply disrespectful act toward the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Adewolu Ladoja.
🔥 What sparked the outrage?
The incident reportedly happened at a public event at the Agodi Government House, Ibadan, where the Alaafin was seen remaining seated while stretching out his hand to greet the Olubadan.
That single gesture has now triggered widespread anger across Ibadanland.
😡 “A gross insult”
Local monarchs, Mogajis, Baales, and prominent sons and daughters of Ibadan condemned the act, calling it an embarrassment of the highest order and a direct insult to the Olubadan stool and Ibadan’s traditional hierarchy.
🗣️ Stakeholders speak out
In a joint statement by:
Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori (President, Ibadan Mogajis)
Mogaji Dr. Nurudeen Akinade (Coordinator, Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative)
the chiefs warned that any further disrespect will be firmly resisted.
They stressed that:
The Olubadan is 82 years old
A former Senator and former Governor
An international figure and successful businessman
The statement partly read:
“Ibadan people are not cowards. We are fearless, but we have chosen restraint in the interest of peace.
Our culture is sacred and anything that ridicules it will be resisted.”
They also warned that if Governor Seyi Makinde fails to caution the Alaafin and Ibadan people are pushed to react, the consequences would be regrettable.
🏛️ “Ibadanland is not subordinate”
The chiefs made it clear:
“The Alaafin cannot come into our land, sit down, and stretch his hand to greet our highly revered Olubadan.
Ibadanland has never been subordinate to the Alaafin.”
⚖️ Respect, tradition, and hierarchy — Ibadan chiefs insist these must never be compromised.
