Governor Moves to Stop Costly Pre-Wedding Ceremonies

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has vowed to strictly enforce the law that bans extravagant pre-wedding ceremonies in the state.

The governor said the rising cost of marriage is discouraging many young people from getting married.

He made this known on Friday while commissioning the renovated Zawiyatu Sheikh Aliyu Bunza Jumu’at Mosque and Islamiyya School in Sokoto.

According to Governor Aliyu, some families demand expensive wedding activities that place heavy financial pressure on intending couples, leading to an increase in unmarried youths.

He warned that many parents and guardians continue to ignore the law, which has forced the government to begin discussions with key stakeholders to strengthen enforcement.

The governor added that high marriage costs could push some youths into immoral acts and called on Islamic leaders, traditional rulers, parents, and guardians to support the government in enforcing the law.
