Germany Considers 2026 World Cup Boycott Amid Tensions Over Trump’s Actions

Germany is weighing the possibility of boycotting the 2026 FIFA World Cup following growing political concerns linked to actions and policies of U.S. President Donald Trump.

The tournament is scheduled to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, but senior figures within German football have called for serious discussions on whether participation aligns with the country’s values amid rising political tensions.

A top official of the German Football Association (DFB) noted that recent developments have strained transatlantic relations, arguing that sport cannot always be completely separated from politics. The official referenced historical precedents where major sporting events were boycotted in protest of political actions.

However, no formal decision has been taken. German authorities and football administrators insist that discussions are still at an early stage, with many stakeholders urging caution and stressing the importance of keeping football free from political disputes.

Meanwhile, other European football powers have distanced themselves from the idea of a boycott, reaffirming their intention to participate in the global tournament.
