Fuel consumption in Nigeria increased sharply in December 2025, reaching 63.7 million litres per day, according to new data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The figure shows a big rise from 52.9 million litres per day recorded in November, representing an increase of 10.8 million litres or 20.4% within one month.
NMDPRA also revealed that total petrol supply to the local market stood at 74.2 million litres per day in December, slightly higher than the 71.5 million litres supplied in November.
Data further showed that fuel supplied by the Dangote Refinery to the Nigerian market rose to 32.01 million litres per day in December, up from 19.47 million litres in the previous month. This means Dangote’s supply grew by over 64% within one month.
However, the refinery did not meet its planned target of 50 million litres per day for local supply during the period.
Recall that in December 2025, Dangote Refinery reduced its petrol price to ₦699, with retail price selling at ₦739 per litre at MRS filling stations across the country.
While the refinery’s management says the price is competitive, some energy experts have described it as a market distortion.
