Fresh Talks Emerge as Tinubu Considers Bishop Kukah for 2027 Vice Presidency

Fresh political discussions indicate that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is quietly weighing four prominent northern Christian leaders as possible running mates ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Media reports across print, broadcast and online platforms consistently mention former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara; Defence Minister, Lt-Gen. Christopher Musa (retd); Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang; and the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, as figures under serious consideration within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sources say the deliberations are part of a broader strategy to balance religion and geography, with all four potential picks coming from predominantly Christian northern states.

Analysts note that under the 1999 Constitution, the President has the freedom to choose a running mate from any part of the country.

The discussions come amid lingering criticism of the Muslim–Muslim ticket adopted in the 2023 elections, which attracted domestic and international scrutiny.
