Former Sokoto East Senator Abubakar Umar Gada has officially left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and announced his intention to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as political realignments heat up ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
Announcing the decision at a gathering of supporters in Sokoto State on Saturday, Gada said his move was driven by the need to “reclaim and rebuild” the PDP in the state after months of uncertainty over his political future.
Gada, who previously represented Sokoto East in the Senate from 2007 to 2011 under the PDP and joined the ADC in 2025, accused former Governor and current Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of failing to fully commit to building the ADC in the state.
“Leadership means identifying with the people, showing commitment and taking responsibility,” Gada said, adding that Tambuwal’s inconsistent engagement left the ADC “in limbo.”
Gada claimed that Tambuwal’s political activities including talks with other parties and speculation around leadership positions elsewhere created confusion among supporters and undermined efforts to strengthen the ADC. Gada said this situation forced his return to the PDP fold.
Despite Gada’s declaration, the Sokoto State PDP has publicly denied that he has formally rejoined the party. The state’s publicity secretary said there was no record of his registration at the ward, local government, state, or national level and that no official welcoming had taken place.
This move comes amid a period of shifting alliances and defections in Nigerian politics, with opposition and ruling parties jockeying for strength ahead of the crucial 2027 election season. Gada’s switch is one of several recent high‑profile changes among political figures as parties work to solidify their influence across states.
