Dr. Andrew Orovwigho, a consultant neuro-psychiatrist at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (FNPH), Enugu, has died after being kidnapped and shot by unknown assailants, raising fresh concerns over the safety of medical professionals in Nigeria.
Dr. Orovwigho was abd¥cted on December 30, 2025, in front of his residence in Enugu State and was reportedly shot during the incident. He was released by his abductors on January 1, 2026, but was allegedly attacked again shortly after his release.
Sources said the doctor was sh%t a second time and abandoned by the roadside. He was later found by a passer-by who rushed him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his inj¥ries on January 2, 2026.
Colleagues described Dr. Orovwigho as a dedicated mental health specialist whose death has sent shockwaves through the medical community in Enugu and beyond, amid rising cases of kidnapping and violent attacks in the state.
Confirming the incident, Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Enugu State chapter, Dr. Sunny Ken Okafor, said an emergency meeting of doctors has been scheduled for next Wednesday to deliberate on the incident and security concerns affecting health workers.
Medical professionals have continued to express alarm over what they describe as an increasingly hostile environment for doctors and nurses across the country.
