The Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami Gomo III, has called on the Federal Government to urgently establish a new military base in southern Kebbi State to stem the rising tide of banditry and insecurity threatening lives and livelihoods in the area.
The traditional ruler made the appeal during a visit to the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), in Abuja, where he expressed deep concern over repeated attacks on communities within the Zuru Emirate and neighbouring local government areas.
According to the Emir, persistent insecurity has forced many residents to abandon farming and mining activities, crippling the local economy despite the region’s vast agricultural and mineral resources.
“Our people are hardworking and productive, but insecurity has made it impossible for them to fully harness the opportunities in the area,” the Emir said, stressing that a permanent military presence would help restore confidence and stability.
He acknowledged the efforts of Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, in addressing security challenges but noted that the scale of the threat requires stronger federal intervention, particularly through the establishment of an additional military formation closer to affected communities.
Responding, the Defence Minister assured the Emir that the request would be carefully reviewed, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening security architecture across the North-West.
The Zuru Emirate lies within a volatile security corridor that has experienced increased attacks by armed groups in recent months, prompting renewed calls from traditional rulers and community leaders for decisive action.
The Emir’s visit also formed part of broader engagements aimed at promoting peace, development and cultural heritage in the region ahead of the Uhola Annual International Cultural Festival, scheduled for later in the year.
