Bail Is Free, Report Any Officer Demanding Money - Police

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has reiterated that bail is free and urged residents to report any police officer who demands money before releasing a suspect.

The command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, made the call on Friday in Abuja while responding to complaints that some officers were extorting suspects and their families before granting bail.

Adeh described the practice as fraudulent and illegal, stressing that reporting such officers would serve as a strong deterrent to others. She noted that many victims often give in to these unlawful demands due to ignorance of their rights or fear of challenging the police.

According to her, a recent case involving an officer who demanded money for bail was successfully reported after the victim provided evidence of a bank transfer made to the officer’s account. She confirmed that necessary disciplinary actions are already being taken.

The police spokesperson encouraged members of the public to report similar misconduct — with evidence — through the Police Complaint Response Unit under the FCT Command.

She further urged residents to always insist on their rights and refuse to pay any money to secure bail, reaffirming that bail remains free under Nigerian law.
