Former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh, has blamed Victor Osimhen for Nigeria’s failure to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Nigeria finished the tournament with a bronze medal after losing to host country Morocco in the semi-final.
According to Oliseh, the problem started after Osimhen had a public argument with Ademola Lookman during Nigeria’s Round-of-16 match against Mozambique, which the Eagles won 4–0.
Osimhen was angry because Lookman did not pass the ball to him when he was in a good position to score. Oliseh said that incident damaged team unity.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Oliseh said Osimhen is a world-class player, but that talent does not give a player the right to disrespect teammates.
He explained that after the incident, Lookman’s performance dropped, even though he was one of Nigeria’s best players in the tournament.
Oliseh added that breaking a teammate’s confidence can destroy the team spirit needed to win big matches, especially against a strong and smart team like Morocco.
He also warned that accepting such behaviour from star players could be dangerous for Nigerian football in the long run.
