There is no crime in serving twice as an elected political office holder, provided it aligns with the will of the electorate. However, it becomes an act of self-centeredness when a politician seeks a third term after openly condemning such monopolization of office.
Abiola Makinde once urged the Ondo people to reject the third-term ambition of Hon. Iranola Akinlaja and publicly vowed never to contest or occupy any political office more than twice. Ironically, events have now taken a dramatic turn.
Abiola Makinde is indirectly soliciting support to be “persuaded” into contesting for a third term at the National Assembly as a Member of the House of Representatives (MHR), while disguising his intention as a senatorial aspirant.
It is no longer news to Abiola Makinde that the APC ticket for Ondo Central Senatorial District will remain with Senator Adegbonmire, SAN, who is expected to serve a second term. Based on this political reality, Makinde has chosen to pursue the same senate seat, although not with the intention of getting the ticket but as a strategic move to later step down and return to the MHR race for a third term, under the guise of persuasion by higher party authorities.
Even his close ally, Hon.Wale Akinlosotu, is quite disappointed with this recent change of *HAM's open confession that he will never contest in the same office thrice* , which Wale Akinlosotu re-echoed it as seen in the viral video, saying Abiola Makinde is a man of his words. Should we say the same Abiola Makinde is no more a man of his words??? Anyways, show me your friend and i will tell you who you also are.
Many find it amusing that Makinde is publicly supporting Dr. Jibayo Adeyeye for the MHR seat, aided by the hollow noise of his few inconsequential loyalists claiming solidarity. However, credible and verifiable sources within Makinde’s crumbling political camp have revealed that he has already concluded plans to use Governor Aiyedatiwa to pressure Dr. Jibayo Adeyeye to step down when the time comes and also request the full support of Dr.Jibayo in the same vein, with promises of so-called “juicy” appointments or offers that may ultimately prove to be mirage.
This crafty intention is aimed at handing Makinde the Ondo East and West APC MHR ticket, despite his reported plans to defect to another political party should the APC leadership choose to deny him the ticket. It is astonishing that Makinde believes Dr. Jibayo Adeyeye can be easily cajoled, unlike other serious contenders who have made it clear they will not step aside for him. HAM should be aware that we love Dr. Jibayo and it will be HARMFUL for Makinde to want to think Jibayo will concede to this cheap manipulation.
Makinde’s selfishness is a clear demonstration of the traits that could cause internal crisis and unresolved challenge to the APC, particularly given that over 90% of the party members in Ondo East and West are reportedly fatigued by his leadership style and self-serving political ambitions.
Based on this reality, we the true, long serving and loyal members of the party, appeal to His Excellency, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and other relevant APC stakeholders to resist any attempt to impose Abiola Makinde on all patriotic party members who are already tired of him, irrespective of his 11hour manipulations. It is important for our beloved and listening governor to note that Makinde’s presence in the party is now causing party internal instability.
Even apart from the party, the people of Ondo East and West are yearning for leadership that is not selfish but for all.
We are happy with Senator Adegbonmire and his effective representation and we are ready to give our support for his second term. That is why we appreciate the apex leadership of the party for listening to us on this and concluding to give our beloved senator his well deserved second term ticket.
On the other hand, having seeing this clear decision, APC members across Ondo East and West have also clearly rejected Makinde’s indirect seek for a third-term agenda, especially through backdoor arrangements. All because he desire to stay in power so as to be relevant to aspire for Governor in the nearest future.
Residents of Ondo Kingdom, especially the constituents from Ondo East, have also voiced a firm rejection of Makinde, with many stating they would rather accept a ticket given to their own illustrious son, an elder statesman, Rt Hon. Adesanmi Olamide Landmark, than endure another term under Makinde’s leadership. Infact, we would rather accept a come back of Akinlaja for a third term, because now we see the difference we could not see then. Eyes are now open!
If Abiola Makinde appears on the Apc ballot in the 2027 general elections, it poses a serious risk to the APC’s electoral success in Ondo Kingdom, including the party’s performance in the 2027 presidential election, just as it has happened before.
Over 90% of APC leaders and members in Ondo Kingdom have already resolved not to continue with Abiola Makinde.
Since the voice of the people is the voice of God, we urge the APC leadership at all levels to respect and uphold the will of the party’s genuine members.
