According to a report by Leadership, on Monday January 19, 2026, a northern youth group within the All Progressives Congress has called on the party to retain President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima as its joint ticket for the 2027 general elections.
The group said any move to change the arrangement could weaken party unity and reduce support in the North.
The group, known as the Concerned Northern APC Youth Forum, said its support for the APC in the 2023 elections was strongly linked to the Tinubu and Shettima partnership, it described the ticket as balanced and inclusive.
According to the group, the combination helped the party gain wide acceptance among young people in the northern region.
Speaking through its chairman, Suleiman Liba, the forum said the decision to choose Shettima as vice president gave northern youths confidence in the APC and added that the pairing reflected political understanding and national cooperation.
The group believes these factors played an important role in the party’s victory during the last election and raised concern over reports that some party figures are pushing for the replacement of the vice president ahead of 2027.
The group warned that such discussions could create division within the party and urged party leaders to avoid actions that could disrupt existing agreements.
According to the forum, suggestions to replace Shettima with another candidate, especially on religious or regional grounds, do not reflect the interests of most northern youths, the group said such ideas could damage trust and weaken the APC’s support base in the region.
“Our support for Mr President was anchored on trust, balance and strategic political judgment. The Tinubu–Shettima ticket represented national cohesion. Any move to tamper with that understanding is unacceptable to us,” he said.
