As the 2027 general election draws closer, political tension is rising in Abia State. Some former governors and opposition leaders are now working together to stop Governor Alex Otti from getting a second term.
Reports say former governors Orji Uzor Kalu and Theodore Orji, alongside other old political leaders, have formed a group to challenge Otti in 2027. They plan to win all elective positions in the state for the APC.
The group, called “The Team,” recently met in Umuahia. They also accused Governor Otti of running the state from his country home instead of the Government House.
Speaking to journalists, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu said Governor Otti has not done much with the funds coming to the state. He claimed Otti is only repainting roads built during his own time as governor. Kalu made it clear he will not support Otti again in 2027.
However, Governor Otti’s aide, Rev. Fr. Christian Anokwuru, dismissed the attacks. He said the opposition is “chasing shadows” and accused former leaders of trying to return to power without showing what they achieved when they were in office.
Political analysts believe the fight is about personal and economic interests, not the people. They pointed out that Otti stopped the payment of salaries and allowances to former governors, a move that may have angered them.
Rights groups and civil society leaders also defended Otti, saying his projects are visible and felt by the people. They insist that Abia residents, not politicians, will decide his fate in 2027.
As the battle lines are drawn, all eyes are now on Abia as the political drama continues.
