Abuja – Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has formally called on Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State to immediately release Chigozie Nwangwu, widely known as Akwa Ọkụkọ-Tiwara Ki, who has been in detention since February 2025.
In a strongly worded message, Sowore described the ongoing detention as “a flagrant abuse of state power and a miscarriage of justice.” He emphasized that the case against Akwa Ọkụkọ, a respected native doctor, appears to be politically and culturally motivated rather than based on legitimate legal grounds.
Sowore highlighted the repeated failures of the prosecution in court, noting that for two consecutive hearings, the so-called star witness failed to appear, and authorities admitted that no criminal items were recovered during Akwa Ọkụkọ’s arrest—only items that were dismissively labeled as “fetish.”
“Cultural practices are not crimes, and intolerance is not law,” Sowore said. He urged Governor Soludo to end this farce before December 19, 2025, allowing Akwa Ọkụkọ to reunite with his family and reclaim his freedom. “Anything less is cruelty masquerading as governance,” Sowore added.
The activist’s intervention has reignited debates over cultural bias, human rights, and the abuse of judicial processes in the state, placing renewed pressure on the Anambra government to act swiftly.
