A Bauchi traditional leader and custodian of the Danmalikin Bauchi title, Aminu Danmaliki, has strongly refuted claims that the implementation of Sharia law in Northern Nigeria endangers Christians or Christianity.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Danmaliki stressed that those portraying Sharia as a weapon against non-Muslims “are either misinformed or ignorant of its true concept.” He clarified that Sharia law applies strictly to Muslims and holds no jurisdiction over individuals outside the Islamic faith.
He also addressed a recent move by a group of Christian activists who petitioned a joint session of the American Congress, alleging religious oppression under Sharia. Danmaliki said the effort only “revived an old, unfounded debate driven mostly by fear, misinformation, and political motives,” urging Nigerians to avoid divisive rhetoric.
He called for greater understanding and coexistence among the country’s diverse religious communities, noting that Sharia contributes to moral discipline, justice, and social order within Muslim societies.
