Airtel Africa has signed a landmark agreement with SpaceX to introduce Starlink Direct-to-Cell satellite connectivity across its 14 African markets, including Nigeria.
The telecom giant disclosed this in a statement released on Tuesday, noting that the partnership will allow Airtel customers with compatible smartphones to connect directly to Starlink satellites in areas where there is no terrestrial mobile network coverage.
This means users in remote and underserved communities will be able to make calls, send messages, and access mobile services without relying on traditional cell towers.
The move is expected to dramatically expand mobile network access and improve digital inclusion for Airtel’s 174 million customers across Africa, marking a major step toward closing the connectivity gap on the continent.
With satellite-to-phone technology now in play, Africa’s telecom landscape could be on the brink of a major transformation.
