FUNAAB-Alpha: Nigeria’s Homegrown Poultry Innovation

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) developed an improved breed of chicken known as FUNAAB-Alpha.

Through years of scientific selection and breeding, FUNAAB-Alpha combines the resilience of indigenous chickens with the productivity traits of exotic lines.

The result? Faster growth, higher egg yield, and strong adaptability to local conditions, while retaining the disease resistance and unique taste that make local chickens so valued.

I took these pictures myself when work took me to the institution a few years ago.

Seeing is believing: this bird is a tangible outcome of Nigerian science at work.

Behind the scenes, this is a form of genetic improvement achieved locally and a reminder that science, when applied thoughtfully in our own context, can produce results that rival global innovations and strengthen food security for smallholder farmers.
