DSS Demands Deactivation of Sowore’s X Account Over Tinubu Comment

The Department of State Services (DSS) has asked X (formerly Twitter) to urgently deactivate Omoyele Sowore’s verified account after he described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” in a post made on August 25.

In a letter dated September 6 and signed by B. Bamigboye on behalf of the DG, the DSS said the remark ridiculed the President before the international community and could incite violence.

“The said tweet is still in circulation and has attracted widespread condemnation… especially supporters of the President who have started taking to the streets in protest, thereby creating political tension and threatening national security,” the letter stated.

The DSS labeled the post as misleading information, online harassment, hate speech, and an attempt to cause disunity, warning that it could amount to domestic terrorism under Nigerian law.

X Corp was given 24 hours to remove the tweet and deactivate Sowore’s account or face “far-reaching measures,” with the service stressing that both Sowore and the platform could be held criminally liable.
