Briggs: Tinubu Has Done No Favour to Rivers People with Suspension of Emergency Rule

Environmental and Human Rights activist Ann-Kio Briggs has said President Bola Tinubu has not done any favour to Rivers State by lifting the six-month emergency rule.

Speaking in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Briggs described the imposition of the emergency rule as unjust and stressed that restoring democratic governance cannot be seen as a gift to the people. She noted that Governor Siminalayi Fubara has always enjoyed the organic support of the majority of Rivers residents, but expressed concern over whether this support will translate into good governance, peace, security, and development.

Briggs argued that the state’s problems were exacerbated by the president, and that the people of Rivers State suffered unnecessarily during the six-month suspension. She urged that the focus should now be on ensuring justice and effective governance for residents.
