Anambra State athletes won a total of 14 medals — four gold, two silver, and eight bronze — at the 2025 National Youth Games, which ended on Saturday with a colourful closing ceremony at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
The performance marked a decline from the previous edition, where Anambra finished eighth overall with 26 medals, including nine gold, nine silver, and eight bronze.
Chairman of the State Sports Development Commission, Patrick-Estate Onyedum, said the Youth Games remained a platform for talent discovery, not medal hunting. He commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for reviving grassroots sports through the reintroduction of school competitions.
Onyedum criticised the continued use of overage athletes, urging national sports authorities to adopt stricter checks. “This competition is for children under 15, but I presented a medal to a young man with a moustache. Age falsification and desperation to win are defeating the purpose,” he said.
Anambra’s 145-member contingent did not feature in any team events.
