Drama as Priest Smashes Beer, Disrupts Women’s Church Meeting in Enugu

 

Tension filled St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Idedu, Etiti Amokwe, Enugu, when the parish priest clashed with members of the women’s group during their annual August meeting.

According to eyewitnesses, the priest had earlier instructed the women to hold their gathering at another venue — away from the church altar — insisting that the meeting should not take place inside the church building. However, for reasons best known to them, the women went ahead and set up their meeting inside the church, right in front of the altar.

When the priest discovered this, he became visibly furious. In a shocking outburst that has since gone viral online, he stormed into the gathering, disrupted the event, and smashed bottles of beer the women had brought with them.

His actions have divided public opinion. Some online commentators condemned his reaction, calling it excessive and even suggesting that he undergo a mental health evaluation. Others, however, defended the priest, pointing to the biblical account of Jesus driving out money changers from the temple in John 2:15: “So He made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.”

Supporters of the priest’s actions argue that by bringing alcohol into the church — and placing it near the altar — the women disrespected the sanctity of God’s house and violated long-standing church traditions.

The incident has sparked heated debates both offline and on social media, with many calling for dialogue and mutual respect between clergy and parishioners.
