The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismissed circulating rumors claiming it banned Tummy Tummy Noodles, tinned tomatoes, and Maggi seasoning cubes, labeling the allegations as false and misleading.
In a statement issued by NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency refuted claims from a viral audio recording alleging that it shut down the Tummy Tummy Noodles manufacturing plant in Anambra State. The audio, which recently resurfaced on social media and messaging platforms, also falsely claimed that the noodles contained acetyl methyl as a preservative and that NAFDAC imposed a nationwide ban on tinned tomatoes and Maggi seasoning cubes.
NAFDAC clarified that the audio first emerged in October 2023, prompting an immediate investigation. An inspection team conducted an unscheduled visit to the Tummy Tummy facility in Anambra, where four noodle variants were sampled and tested at the Agulu Laboratory. Results confirmed no regulatory violations, and the facility was never sealed, contrary to the claims.
The agency further debunked allegations of acetyl methyl in the noodles, affirming that no such substance was detected. Extensive tests conducted in 2023 across production sites and retail markets also found no traces of ethylene oxide, its derivatives, mycotoxins, or heavy metals in instant noodles or seasoning products in Nigeria, with all results meeting global safety standards.
NAFDAC emphasized that no ban exists on tinned tomatoes or Maggi seasoning cubes and urged the public to disregard the audio to prevent unnecessary panic. The agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health through rigorous regulation of food and drug products in Nigeria and called on citizens to avoid sharing unverified information.
