Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has accused Governor Hyacinth Alia of using thugs and government resources to interfere in the affairs of the state judiciary.
Ortom made the allegation during an interview on Channels Television while discussing the recent incident in which the convoy of Peter Obi was blocked in Makurdi.
The former governor was reacting to the Alia administration’s claim that it was not aware of Obi’s visit to the state.
Ortom alleged that Alia had previously tried to remove a Chief Judge of the state through the use of thugs.
He further claimed that the governor sent tipper trucks loaded with sand to block the Chief Judge’s office during the incident.
According to Ortom, Alia had also made statements suggesting that if people did not accept him, he would not accept anyone else.
The former governor therefore questioned the governor’s claim that he was unaware of what happened during Obi’s visit.
Ortom alleged that the incident was a deliberate action and insisted that Alia could not deny involvement.
He clarified that his position was not based on support for Obi, but on the need to protect democracy and ensure that political activities could take place freely in Benue State.
In his words, "Governor Alia was one person who said, 'No Alia, no Benue,' and went to remove a Chief Judge through these thugs, and Alia sent tippers with a load of sand to block the Chief Judge's office. He did it. And he has been saying that. And he has been saying that if nobody accepts him, he will not accept any other person."
