The Commander of the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital, Surg Commodore Ahmadu Shehu Mohammed, has pledged stronger collaboration with the Department of Nursing Science, University of Calabar (UNICAL), to enhance the clinical training and professional development of Nursing and midwifery students.
Surg Commodore Mohammed made the commitment when he led a delegation from the hospital on a courtesy visit to the Head of the Department of Nursing Science, Prof. Alberta David Nsemo.
The Naval Commander, a member of Direct Regular Course 12 and a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, the National Defence College and the West African College of Physicians, expressed appreciation to Prof. Nsemo and the University management for their commitment to training competent nurses and midwives.
He said the visit was primarily to appreciate the Head of Department and the University management for their efforts in preparing future generations of nurses and midwives.
“We also look forward to strengthening the cordial relationship between the Naval Reference Hospital and the Department of Nursing Science, and to commencing better collaboration in the areas of training, internships and deployment of nursing students,” he stated.
Surg Commodore Mohammed further disclosed that the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital was willing to accept nursing students from UNICAL for clinical placement as part of its contribution to their professional training.
Responding, the Head of the Department of Nursing Science, Prof. Alberta Nsemo, expressed gratitude to the Naval delegation for the visit, describing it as “another opening for the progress of the Department of Nursing Science and the University of Calabar at large.”
Prof. Nsemo noted that the proposed collaboration would provide UNICAL nursing students with greater opportunities for practical exposure and hands-on clinical experience, thereby complementing the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom.
She expressed optimism that the partnership would further strengthen the relationship between the University and the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital and contribute to the development of highly skilled nursing professionals.
The visit ended with the Naval delegation presenting a commemorative gift to the Head of Department in appreciation of the warm reception accorded them.
The Commander was accompanied by senior nursing officers from the hospital, including Lt. Cdr. M. O. Isanghedighi, Deputy Chief Matron; MWOSN M. Egiriba, Chief Matron; OSSN J. Ishaya; OSMA Sunday; and Lt. I. P. Udobang, Nursing Training Officer and Officer-in-Charge, Maternity.
