Brain, a Nigerian comedian and sketch creator Jotter has talked candidly about his early financial hardships and how poverty shaped his perspective on money.
In a widely viewed video, the comic recalled how he got his first significant pay cheques as his comedic career started to take off.
Brain Jotter claimed that prior to 2019, he had never seen ₦100,000 and was taken aback when he began getting paid ₦200,000 for his labour.
Before a business approached him with a ₦2 million one-year endorsement deal, he recalled how a man had supported him early in his career.
Brain Jotter claims that because he was thrilled about the money, he signed the contract without reading it.
“I didn’t read the contract. They said 2 million Naira. I did not read.
“I didn’t, I’m like, what do you, what is on the contract that I cannot do? I didn’t open the book. Oh my God. I didn’t even open the book.
“And then I signed and then they gave me like 70%, 1 million.”
He said he immediately went to his mother’s shop after receiving the money.
“At that time, if you drink malt, you’re a big boy.
“2019. In the real world at that time, who drink malt? Because if you drink Coke, everywhere good. But you drink malt.
“I just buy malt first, collect meat.”
According to the comic, his mother also requested that he give her the money, although at first he wasn't sure why.
Despite having a one-year contract, Brain Jotter continued, his career took off in just three months.
“But guess what? I signed a one-year deal. But in three months, I outgrew that contract. Like I was begging to refund.”
According to Brain Jotter, he did not feel comfortable spending money right away despite his increasing income.
He claimed that whenever he received big sums of money, he frequently got scared because he was concerned about how long the money would last.
“Yeah, because, because each time I get something big, I get scared. Because I, because how can I keep up? How can I, that’s all the thing in my head.
“When I got the money, I was scared.
