ABUJA, Nigeria, July 20 (African News Digest) – Vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said a government led by the party would be willing to engage all stakeholders, including terrorists and criminals, in dialogue as part of efforts to tackle insecurity in Nigeria.
Kwankwaso made the statement on Monday during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today, while outlining how a potential Peter Obi–Kwankwaso administration would address the country's security challenges if elected in 2027.
"We will work with the people, even the terrorists and of course the criminals themselves, to see what can be done to discourage their actions. Of course, we will talk, we will talk with everybody," he said.
The former Kano State governor argued that residents in communities affected by insecurity often possess valuable information about criminal groups operating in their areas, including their locations and identities.
However, he said many communities are reluctant to share such information with security agencies because they fear possible reprisals and lack confidence in the protection provided by authorities.
"You see, all these things that are happening today, if you go to localities, those places that these insecurities are happening, I can tell you, people know almost everything," Kwankwaso said.
He added that some residents who had previously provided information to security agencies did not receive adequate protection, discouraging others from coming forward.
Kwankwaso's comments come amid renewed political debate over how Nigeria should address terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity ahead of the 2027 general election.
