Abia State University (ABSU) has reportedly suspended the Head of the Anatomy Department, Dr. Agbai Johnson Ukwa, over allegations that he extorted students by demanding as much as ₦1.5 million to award passing grades in examinations.
The development was disclosed by education consultant and Educare CEO, Alex Onyia, who has repeatedly called for an investigation into the lecturer's alleged activities.
Back in May 2026, Onyia accused Dr. Agbai of demanding money from students before awarding pass marks, alleging that those who refused to pay risked failing their examinations or having their scripts declared missing.
At the time, Onyia wrote on X:
"This is Dr Agbai Johnson Ukwa. He is the HOD of Anatomy Department, Abia State University.
"I heard he extorts his students before grading them or they must fail or get a missing script.
"The government should thoroughly investigate him.
"Lets restore sanity in our universities!"
Providing an update on July 21, Onyia claimed the university had suspended the lecturer while investigations continue.
He wrote:
"This man was suspended today by Abia State University.
"Investigations so far have revealed that he has been involved in grade sorting and other strange activities. He charges as high as ₦1.5m to pass MBBS exam.
"The Abia State Government has intensified its investigation and is reviewing results and mark sheets for all students in the Uni for the past 5 years.
"Some graduates' results may be cancelled after this investigation.
"This is the most thorough academic investigation at any Nigerian university so far."
As of the time of this report, Abia State University has not publicly released an official statement confirming the suspension or the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
