UMUAHIA, Nigeria, July 22 (African News Digest) – First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called on Nigerians to patronise locally produced fabrics and clothing to strengthen domestic industries, create jobs and help Nigerian brands compete with foreign products.
Mrs Tinubu made the call on Tuesday in Akwete, Abia State, during an inspection of the traditional fabric production process, where she visited hand-weaving and processing facilities.
The First Lady said increased patronage of indigenous fabrics would create more employment opportunities, particularly for women working in local textile and fabric-producing establishments.
She said the Federal Government was interested in supporting initiatives that create jobs for women and help reduce poverty, while expressing support for the installation of modern equipment at the Akwete fabric production centre.
Mrs Tinubu also urged stakeholders to ensure that the financial assistance she provided for the Akwete research and production centre is effectively utilised for the benefit of women workers and the wider community.
The First Lady, who was honoured with a chieftaincy title by Abia monarchs, also called for stronger cultural and economic cooperation among Nigerians from different ethnic backgrounds, including the Igbo and Yoruba, saying such collaboration could help expand the country’s local clothing and textile industry.
Earlier, the APC Women Leader in Abia State, Cecilia Erondu, said Mrs Tinubu’s support for the state’s indigenous fabric industry reflected the Federal Government’s efforts to tackle poverty and unemployment.
Erondu also commended Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, for mobilising members of the All Progressives Congress in Abia State ahead of the 2027 elections.
