ABUJA, Nigeria – Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has described former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose as a grassroots politician and a man of the masses, defending his appointment as Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
Sani said Fayose's appointment would help advance efforts to expand electricity access to people living in rural communities across Nigeria.
The Presidency had announced Fayose's appointment on Monday as part of a series of appointments made by President Bola Tinubu to various government agencies.
Tinubu's spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed the appointment while announcing the new government appointments.
Reacting to the development in a post on X, Sani said Fayose's background as a grassroots politician made him suitable for an agency focused on improving electricity access in rural areas.
“My friend Fayose is a grassroots politician and a man of the masses. He is appointed to an agency where the rural masses can have access to electricity,” Sani wrote.
The former senator also urged Nigerians not to judge Fayose based on statements he allegedly made several years ago, using a personal analogy to defend the former governor against criticism.
“Why do you want to judge him by what he said years ago? Let he who has never assured his EX that they will be together forever cast the first stone,” he added.
Fayose's appointment has generated reactions in political circles, with supporters highlighting his political experience and grassroots connections while critics have questioned the decision in light of his past public statements.
