In his words "I am a Muslim, but everyone in Burkina Faso has the right to practice their own religion. There will never be Sharia law here."
"Burkinabè studying Sharia in Saudi Arabia should remain there and will never be allowed to return to this country to practice what they have learned. We need people with technological skills to build our nation, not Sharia scholars."
Traoré confirmed that while he is a practicing Muslim, Burkina Faso is an inclusive nation where Christians, Muslims, and traditionalists must coexist peacefully under one constitutional law.
Traoré highlighted a census identifying over 800 Burkinabè youths studying Islamic jurisprudence and Sharia law in Arab countries on private scholarships. He questioned the utility of this education, asking what country they planned to return and apply it to.
Rather than leaving them stranded, Captain Traoré announced plans to repatriate these students who are willing to return home so they can learn practical vocational trades and technical skills within Burkina Faso under strict government regulations while those who insist on studying religious courses in Arab countries should remain there after graduation and practice it.
This secular policy aligns with his recent decision to turn down a foreign proposal from Saudi Arabia to build hundreds of mosques. He countered by requesting that international partners invest in schools, hospitals, infrastructure, and job-creating industries instead.
