The Senate has begun moves to summon the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and about 40 Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) over their alleged failure to honour invitations regarding an ongoing probe into revenue remittances and compliance with financial laws.
The resolution followed a motion by Senate Committee on Finance Chairman, Senator Sani Musa, who accused several government agencies of frustrating legislative oversight by refusing to appear before the committee or submit requested financial records. He also alleged that some agencies have withheld funds due to the Federal Government since 2020, contrary to the Fiscal Responsibility Act and other extant laws.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio reaffirmed that the National Assembly has the constitutional authority under Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution to investigate public finances and compel agencies to appear before it. He directed the Finance Committee to take the necessary steps to ensure all defaulting agencies comply with the summons.
