ABUJA, Nigeria – The African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of being trapped in a credibility crisis over conflicting accounts surrounding the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, PFIPC.
Atiku said the conflicting testimonies from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, OAGF, and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, over the opening of PFIPC-linked accounts had exposed serious contradictions within the Federal Government.
In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the CBN’s testimony before the House of Representatives contradicted the account earlier presented by the Accountant-General’s office.
According to him, while one institution reportedly denied authorising the opening of the accounts and raised allegations of forgery, another allegedly told lawmakers that the accounts were opened on the directive of the Accountant-General after due process was followed.
Atiku argued that both accounts could not be true and called on President Tinubu to clarify which version his administration accepts.
He urged the National Assembly to summon the Accountant-General of the Federation and the CBN Governor to appear together before its investigative committee and give evidence under oath.
Atiku also criticised what he described as the silence of the Attorney-General of the Federation, saying the government’s handling of the controversy had heightened public suspicion and concerns over accountability.
The ADC presidential candidate said the PFIPC controversy had gone beyond disputed accounts, describing it as a test of the President’s integrity and competence.
He demanded an independent investigation into the matter and called for all those found responsible to be held accountable.
Atiku further urged President Tinubu to apologise to Nigerians, arguing that failure to restore public confidence through a credible investigation would, in his view, undermine the President’s moral authority to remain in office.
